Suit Maintenance: The Daily, Weekly and Seasonal Routine

By Margaret Holloway10 min readMarch 2026

A well-maintained suit can last fifteen years or more. A neglected one will look tired within two. The difference comes down to a small number of consistent habits — most of which take less than two minutes each.

After each wear: brush and hang

After wearing, brush the suit with a natural-bristle clothes brush before hanging. This removes surface dust, lint and particles before they work into the weave. Brush in the direction of the fabric grain — typically downward on the body, following the nap. Hang on a wide-shouldered wooden or padded hanger that fills the jacket's shoulders fully. Do not hang in a closed wardrobe immediately after wearing — allow the suit to air for at least 30 minutes to release body heat and moisture. A breathable garment bag is appropriate for storage but not for immediate post-wear hanging.

Rotation: the single most important longevity factor

Fabric needs time to recover from wear. The fibres in a suit jacket that has been worn all day are compressed and stressed; given 24–48 hours resting on a hanger, they recover. Wearing the same suit on consecutive days doesn't allow this recovery and accelerates wearing out of the fabric — particularly at the trouser seat, jacket elbows and trouser knees. A minimum three-suit rotation for regular business wear is the professional standard for this reason.

Dry cleaning: less is more

Dry cleaning uses chemical solvents that clean effectively but also gradually weaken fabric fibres and fade colour over repeated cycles. A suit worn regularly should be dry cleaned no more than once or twice per year. Between cleans, spot clean small marks with a damp cloth and specialist spot remover. Steam pressing — either at home with a garment steamer or professionally — can refresh a suit between dry cleans, removing odour and light creasing without the chemical exposure of dry cleaning.
