Eco Laundry Detergents: What the Labels Mean and What to Ignore

Eco laundry detergent is a crowded and inconsistently labelled category. Some products represent genuine improvements in environmental impact. Others use green marketing language without meaningful substantiation. Understanding the key variables helps separate them.

What actually makes a detergent more sustainable

The meaningful environmental variables in laundry detergents are surfactant biodegradability, packaging, concentrated formula, phosphate content, and optical brighteners. Surfactants that biodegrade quickly and completely have lower aquatic toxicity than persistent synthetic surfactants. Concentrated formulas reduce packaging and transport emissions per wash. Phosphate-free formulas avoid the algal bloom problem that phosphate-heavy products cause in waterways. These are the factors worth looking for rather than general green claims.

Certifications worth trusting

The EU Ecolabel for laundry detergents has standardised criteria covering biodegradability, aquatic toxicity, packaging, and fragrance. Products with this label have been independently verified against those criteria. The B Corp certification covers broader business practices including supply chain but is less specific to product chemistry. Country-specific certifications vary in rigour. Third-party environmental certifications are more meaningful than self-declared claims like 'natural', 'plant-based', or 'green' — none of these terms has a regulated definition in most markets.

Concentrated vs standard: the clearest trade-off

Concentrated detergents require smaller doses per wash — typically 20–35ml versus 75–100ml for standard products. This means less product per wash, smaller packaging per number of washes, and lower transport emissions. The environmental saving is real and proportional. The trade-off is that concentrated products are less forgiving of overdosing — using too much wastes both product and money, and excess detergent leaves residue in fabric that requires extra rinse cycles to remove. Measuring precisely matters more with concentrated products than with standard ones.
