How to Treat Sweat Stains and Yellow Underarm Marks

By Margaret Holloway7 min readApril 2026

Fresh sweat stains and set yellow underarm marks require different treatments. The yellow discolouration is not from sweat alone — it's a chemical reaction between sweat proteins and aluminium compounds in antiperspirant deodorants, and it requires enzymatic or oxygen-based treatment.

Fresh sweat stains: act before they set

Fresh sweat stains are protein-based and respond well to cool water and enzymatic detergent. Rinse the affected area with cool water (never hot — heat sets protein stains) as soon as possible after wearing. Apply a small amount of enzymatic liquid detergent directly, work in gently, and wash on a cool or warm cycle. For cotton, a paste of baking soda and water applied for 30 minutes before washing is effective. For wool, sponge with cool water and a drop of wool-safe detergent — avoid scrubbing, which causes felting.

Yellow underarm stains: what causes them

The yellow-brown staining seen in underarm areas of white and light garments is not caused by sweat alone. It results from a reaction between sweat proteins and aluminium chloride compounds found in antiperspirant deodorants. The reaction occurs during wear and is accelerated by heat and time. This is why garments stored unwashed develop yellowing that wasn't visible when first worn.

Treating set yellow stains

Set yellow underarm stains require more aggressive treatment than fresh sweat. An oxygen-based stain remover (sodium percarbonate products) soaked for 1–3 hours in warm water is effective on white cotton. Enzymatic pre-treatments left for 30–60 minutes work on coloured fabrics where bleaching agents aren't suitable. For wool and silk, professional dry cleaning is safer than home bleach-based treatment. Prevention is more effective than treatment: allow deodorant to dry completely before dressing, and wash garments promptly after wearing rather than storing worn.
