Spin Speed and Fabric Damage: Finding the Right Setting
Spin speed is one of the most overlooked washing machine settings. Higher spin speeds remove more water and reduce drying time — but they also apply significant mechanical stress to fabric fibres. The right spin speed depends on fabric type.
How spin speed affects fabric
Spin speed is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm). At 1200–1600 rpm — typical high spin — centrifugal forces press fabric hard against the drum, stretching and compressing fibres rapidly and repeatedly. For durable fabrics like cotton and denim this is manageable. For delicate fabrics like wool, silk and fine knitwear, high spin speeds can cause permanent distortion, stretching, and in wool, the beginning of felting. The drum speed during the spin cycle is separate from the agitation speed during the wash cycle — most machines let you control them independently.
Recommended spin speeds by fabric type
Cotton and linen can tolerate 1200–1400 rpm without issue. Synthetic fabrics (polyester, nylon, acrylic) do well at 800–1000 rpm — lower spin reduces static and pilling. Wool and cashmere should be spun at 600–800 rpm maximum — the wool cycle on most machines sets this automatically. Silk should be spun at 400–600 rpm or hand-pressed to remove water without machine spinning. Structured garments (suits, tailored jackets) benefit from the lowest available spin speed to preserve their internal construction.
Balancing drying time against fabric stress
A higher spin speed means less water in the garment after washing, which means shorter drying time. For cotton and synthetics this is a straightforward efficiency gain. For delicate fabrics the trade-off is different: the fabric stress from high spin is greater than the convenience of faster drying. A slow-spun wool garment may take longer to dry flat, but the fibres are undamaged. A fast-spun wool garment may dry faster but emerge misshapen. For most delicate fabrics, accepting slower drying in exchange for lower spin stress is the right trade-off.
